Beverly Sandlin seen on the Minnesota Bound (re-runs are also on Due North Outdoors in Wisconsin) episodes:
“Going on the fossil hunt with the Fossil Lady was one of the best days of the summer. It was so much fun and educational (without even realizing it was educational). š My son is nine years old, and he summed up the day as “awesome” and gave it a “five out of five stars.” It was not what I expected when signed up for a fossil hunt, but I was greatly surprised. We had such a blast. The Fossil Lady knows her fossils and has the best-kept secrets in Fillmore County for its beauty and fossils. I would recommend this adventure for anyone who likes rocks/fossils and new discoveries.

After all the cold weather, walking around in the sunshine and seeing the first flowers blooming is a real treat. Spring is the busiest time of the year here at Whispering Winds. With only a handful of months between freezes, you have to move fast to get things planted in time. While this can contribute to a feeling of being rushed, it’s always worth slowing down and taking in the newness & beauty bursting all around. After only a few weeks, the landscape totally transforms into a sea of colors and lush vegetation. Baring witness to this metamorphosis is definitely one of the highlights of the year.
Beverly is the visionary behind Whispering Winds and truly a spiritual being having a human experience. Her motto is āLive Your Best Lifeā and itās her mission to help as many people as possible actualize their best life. Living your best life isnāt just about having a good time, itās doing it in a sustainable way while also trying to uplift the folks around you.
Acquiring the land 15 years ago, she sees herself as a land steward as opposed to a property owner. This is an important aspect of Whispering Winds: caring for the land and ensuring itās just as magical for future generations as it is for the current ones. And that is incredibly important ā this place really does have a certain magic to it. Guests are constantly commenting on the healing energy that seems to blanket the farm. You canāt deny the beauty of the green, tin roofed buildings nestled between hills and a meandering stream. Glamping units & tiny houses scattered throughout the farm form the basis of Bevās long-term vision: establishing a tiny house community practicing sustainable living, permaculture, and living your best life.
Live your best life.
After 6 years of hosting guests (and pushing 70 years old), Bev has kicked into motion the transition of Whispering Winds to the next generation. Meet RJ, a 32 year old software engineer from Richmond, Virginia. He quit his job at the end of 2024 and embarked on a trip across the country to see what else is out there. By āchanceā his first stop ended up being Whispering Winds. A 7 day stay turned into 10ā¦which turned into 12ā¦and eventually an entire 2 weeks. Like many others before him, he was captivated by the energy of the place as well as Beverly herself.
The two stayed in touch over the next couple months, chatting on the phone and developing a rare inter-generational friendship. Already seeking a new steward for the past year, Beverly made an offer to RJ for him to take the reins. Having converted a shipping container into a tiny house in his backyard in Richmond, Virginia, he also shared the dream of building a sustainable community. His time at Whispering Winds cemented the magic and opportunity the land has. He enthusiastically accepted the proposition for partnership and becoming the new steward ā however he knew he couldnāt do it alone.
After his stint at Whispering Winds, RJ traveled to Lake Tahoe where he stayed with his close friend Cadence for a couple weeks. Cadence is an avid herbalist and shares the appreciation of the magic nature can provide. The two of them have day-dreamed about creating a hostel or co-op (some sort of community) for some time now. So naturally, that was a frequent topic of conversation while in Lake Tahoe. With Bev giving RJ the opportunity to do exactly his, he knew h had to loop Cadence in. Ready for her next challenge as well, she happily accepted to partner with RJ on becoming the new stewards of Whispering Winds.
Collaboration will be the key to Whispering Winds success.
This takes us to today where we are starting the partnership with Beverly and transition of Whispering Winds to RJ & Cadence. However Bev isnāt going anywhere ā the intergenerational aspect of this partnership, we believe, is crucial to the success of our vision: creating a nature-based micro retreat focusing on helping people to live their best life. However just hosting folks for a getaway is only one way to realize this dream. We are going to be growing our community by hosting classes, workshops, and weekend retreats which focus on things that excite us: sustainable living, herbalism, yoga, permaculture and more.
We invite you to help contribute and join our community! Have an idea for a class? Want to teach a workshop? Are you an artist that wants a place to sell your art? Or just a freeform visionary with a dream? Give us a shout with your idea, we are all ears. š
